I had similar problems with CAB about a year ago (no NEWFAT or VFAT then).
CAB crashed and left its cache directory in a complete mess. A lot of
filenames with binary characters in them, very hard to remove. Maybe
Alexander Clauss does some optimizations for reading cache entries that
don't always work?
