In your favourite shell, type Control+V then an arrow key. You will
see the actual character sequence generated by the arrow. Depending on
the terminals, the sequence is not the same. This is why readline (or
equivalent) has to be configured.

For cursor left:

On toswin the output is:
^[D

On conholio the output is:
^[[D

Maybe this can be used to fix the problem - anyway, very interesting
feature....
