Then it terminates cleanly.

And what happens then? You're back at the login screen?

"Hit any key" from XaAES, then "type 'x' for shell" from xaloader, then back to start-shell.

Maybe what you see is a repeated restart by xaloader though this should not
happen either.

I'm attaching the boot log, in case it would help you. Look for "x-e-ish.rsc". Also, you'll notice there are random characters near the "buildinfo:" line.

Yes. There was a bug in the taskmanager which I've been searching for months (and apparently only I have noticed), which is fixed since Sunday. Maybe this causes it. I've seen this corrupted output too in previous versions.

But you should only load 1 gradient, there's no need for more, each is meant to be complete and they overwrite each other.

But then you'd also want xaaes.rsc, etc. and so on.

Except that I'm not supposed to specify other files for these in the config file. Only for the widgets. There's no source of error there. But I agree it's
not that important.

Maybe it could run without widgets at all, but I don't want to support broken config-files ;)
