Ok, by running your script in TosWin2, I reproduced the stairs problem from the background process. 

I can also reproduce it like this:

(sleep 1 ; echo -e 'a\nb') &

It equally fails with FreeMiNT 1.16.

So I'm relieved that I didn't cause a regression there.
