Yep, I have the line "38400" in /etc/ppp/options.

No, I have uninstalled it a long time ago because I need a stable system.

No, seriously, I had it installed a couple of weeks ago, it showed
absolutely no effect on a null-modem connection and so I have kicked it
into the bucket.
Besides, Rufus (a terminal program, like Connect, just in case ...) gets a
"CONNECT 38400" reply from the modem, without hsmodem!  That's what made
me think that MiNT now replaces hsmodem stuff.  Am I wrong there?

I would really like to be able to go without hsmodem, because if I use it
my init daemon (well, actually it is login or getty) crashes.
